A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's major public works projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his government's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party urged an urgent suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
