Larian Studios Unveil a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The speculation around The Game Awards was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio warned that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words implies that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it sparked the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible with a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to experiment both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be approached in a variety of manners, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, fans can get ready for another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
